Google Chrome Detects Man-in-the-Middle Attacks

– a press release

“Safe Browsing also had to evolve to effectively protect users. And it has.”

For Immediate Release – September 12, 2017

Muncie, Ind. – Google plans to launch a new security feature in the upcoming Chrome 63 browser that notifies users about Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) issues.

In Chrome 63, Google is introducing a new warning screen whenever the browser detects a large number of SSL connection errors within a short timeframe. This is a signal that an attacker is attempting to intercept the user’s web traffic, albeit with no success.

This includes both malware and legitimate applications, such as antivirus and firewall. Chrome will distinguish between MITM issues caused by “legitimate” software installed on the system, and MITM attacks by filtering those that rewrite SSL connections properly and displacing those that do not. Users will be redirected to a message screen and forced out of their current browsing session if the SSL connections appear malicious.

The shift is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to fine-tune its Safe Browsing feature, launched 10 years ago. Google said on Monday the feature is now active on 3 billion devices, up from 2 billion as of May 2016. “Safe Browsing also had to evolve to effectively protect users. And it has,” says Google’s Stephan Somyogi and Allison Miller.

Chrome 63 is scheduled to be released on December 5th, according to the Chromium Development Calendar. Users can preview this release through the Google Chrome development branch known as Google Canary.
