Windows 10 Ransomware Updates

– a press release

“Microsoft has announced some interesting security-related changes to Windows 10…”

For Immediate Release – July 20, 2017

Muncie, Ind. – Due to the recent upswing in targeted ransomware attacks, which are estimated to have cost individuals and companies over one billion dollars globally, Windows 10 plans to roll out new security features.

Expected to debut in September, Microsoft has announced some interesting security-related changes to Windows 10 with the next Fall Creators Update. Windows 10 beta testers can now preview these changes with a new “controlled folder access” feature. This feature is designed to only allow specific applications to access the read/write permissions of a given folder. By default, this feature prevents apps from accessing the following locations: desktop, pictures, movies, and user documents.

Dona Sarkar, head of Microsoft’s Windows Insiders program, says that this extra security measure is a step in the right direction. “Controlled folder access monitors the changes that apps make to files in certain protected folders….If an app attempts to make a change to these files, and the app is blacklisted by the feature, you’ll get a notification about the attempt.”

The new controlled folder feature is designed to protect against ransomware and viruses from both accessing and locking machines out of certain folders.  This announcement is timely as the WannaCry and Petya ransomware attacks continue to wreak havoc on Windows machines and other devices worldwide.
