Atlanta Recovering from Ransomware Attack

Muncie, Ind. – The city of Atlanta’s online systems were compromised March 22nd as a result of a ransomware attack, titled SamSam. The ransomware attack halted many city operations both online and off. In the wake of this attack, Atlanta residents were left unable to pay utilities and tickets online, validate scheduled court proceedings, or access city Wi-Fi.
Nearly two weeks later, few details have been disclosed about the event. Atlanta officials have not yet publicly identified the means of access for such an attack. Further, Atlanta city officials are not saying whether they were strong-armed into paying the $51,000 ransom to hackers holding many of the municipality’s online services hostage. In a show of progress and due diligence, the city has announced a partnership with SecureWorks, an Atlanta-based information security firm.
As of today, most online systems have been recovered and are publicly accessible. Officials claim they have no reason to believe that any personal information was compromised throughout this process. This unfortunate case serves as a reminder to both businesses and government agencies — particularly local government — that ransomware and other malicious cyber attacks are a very real threat.
