Microsoft Acquires GitHub
– a press release
“This 7.5 billion dollar deal likely has large implications for the open-source community and has been met with backlash among featured groups and developers.”
For Immediate Release – June 05, 2018
Muncie, Ind. – According to Bloomberg, Microsoft is set to acquire GitHub, a popular code-repository and online forum. GitHub is a for-profit company that offers free hosting for open-source projects and online collaboration tools.
This 7.5 billion dollar deal likely has large implications for the open-source community and has been met with backlash among featured groups and developers. This skepticism is likely due to Microsoft’s historically anti open-source attitude and business practices.
Proponents of the acquisition contend that Microsoft has recently turned a new leaf on this front. For example, Microsoft currently hosts a number of high-profile projects via GitHub’s open-source services, such as Visual Studio Code, .NET runtime, Chakra Javascript engine, and Microsoft’s latest documentation system.
