WannaCry Ransomware Coverage
– a press release
“Be on your guard, be alert, and think before you click.”
For Immediate Release – June 05, 2017
Muncie, Ind. – Due to the recent widespread coverage of the WannaCry ransomware outbreak, which is estimated to have cost individuals and companies an estimated one billion dollars globally, enterprising bad guys have come up with a new scam.
The scam, seen first in the UK, causes a pop-up window to appear on the victim’s computer. This window appears to be from Microsoft, and cannot be closed. The message instructs the user to call a number on the screen. Once on the call with “tech support”, the scammer acquires remote access to the computer, and runs the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. This free download then demands a payment of £320, which is approximately $415, before they will release the computer. This is just another way that criminals are using fear and social engineering to extort millions of dollars from unsuspecting computer users. Be on your guard, be alert, and think before you click.
We suggest sending the following out to all your employees and friends:
“Bad guys are now trying to trick computer users into believing they are infected with the WannaCry ransomware. A popup arrives on your screen from nowhere, and you cannot get rid of it. They popup claims it is from Microsoft, that your computer is infected, and that you need to call tech support.
But when you call the number you get a scammer on the phone who will try to charge you 400 dollars to run a Microsoft malicious software removal tool that anyone can download for free. Remember that Microsoft’s error and warning messages on your PC will never include a phone number. Also, Microsoft will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PC or technical support. Any communication they have with you must be initiated by you.”
