Windows 10 “Controlled Folder Access” to Fight Ransomware
– a press release
“The recent Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes an anti-ransomware feature known as ‘Controlled Folder Access.”
For Immediate Release – October 24, 2017
Muncie, Ind. – The recent Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes an anti-ransomware feature known as “Controlled Folder Access.” As the name suggests, this new feature allows users to limit who does and does not have access to a certain collection of folders on a user’s machine.
The feature works by blacklisting, or automatically blocking all access, to foreign users and applications. Meaning that, in theory, ransomware attacks would not be able to access, encrypt, or any way manipulate the contents of a folder with this protection. Instructions on how to activate this new feature can be found on Windows IT Pro Center.
It is important to note that this additional layer of security is not fool-proof. As ransomware attacks become more sophisticated, it is likely that this feature will be a newly identified attack vector. In fact, users are already reporting deceiving promotions that urge them to disable this feature set. However, this does mark a significant milestone for Microsoft — and hopefully foreshadows a underlying strategy and mindfulness toward future protections.
